Carolyn Uchiyama
Carolyn Uchiyama, born and raised in Wahiawa, is a graduate of Leilehua High School and the University of Hawaii in education. She taught at Waipahu Elementary, Nanakuli Elementary and retired from Helemano Elementary in 2009.
Ms. Uchiyama was introduced to Buddhism by Rev. Thomas Okano when she asked him to help her sons with their religious work in Cub Scouting while they were attending Wahiawa Hongwanji Gakuen. He agreed and asked that they attend temple and thus began her spiritual journey. She began teaching Dharma school at Wahiawa Hongwanji as well as participating on their Board of Trustees. Currently, she is co-president of Wahiawa Hongwanji.
She is active on the Hongwanji State level as a director from the Oahu District, chair of the Buddhist Study Center Committee and a member of the Living Gratitude AdHoc Committee. She also serves as a co-chair for the 15th Buddhist Women’s Assn. (BWA) State Membership Conference and is on the workshop committee for the 18th World Buddhist Women’s Convention.
