Reverend Eric Matsumoto
Reverend Eric Matsumoto grew up in Kona on the Big Island and after graduating from Konawaena High School, he obtained his bachelor’s degree in History and also Liberal Studies-Japanese Language & Culture from University of Hawaii, Hilo. He later graduated from Ryukoku University Graduate School, Kyoto, Japan with a master’s degree in Shin Buddhist Studies.
In 1991 after becoming a fully certified minister, he returned to Hawaii and was assigned as an associate minister at Hawaii Betsuin in Honolulu. Thereafter, he served as minister of Honokaa, Kamuela, Kohala, and Paauilo Hongwanji Buddhist Temples on Big Island of Hawaii and minister of Moiliili Hongwanji Buddhist Temple in Honolulu. Rev. Matsumoto, currently is the resident minister of Aiea Hongwanji Mission.
Reverend Matsumoto served as the 16th Bishop of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii from March 1, 2011 - June 30, 2023.
He is interested in Buddhist art and architecture. He and his wife Tamayo, have two children, Chika and Caden.
