Hongwanji Spring Bazaar 2024

Mahalo to all who came out to the Hongwanji Spring Bazaar at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin on Sunday, March 24! We had a very busy food booth in the Annex, selling out of just about everything that we brought from our temple. Everything we sold was made by WBT members and volunteers at WBT, including takuan (pickled radish), bitter melon namasu, cabbage tsukemono, pickled onions, nantu (Okinawan mochi), banana muffins, and several varieties of manju (a Japanese pastry).

Thank you to all the volunteers and the Hawaii Betsuin for hosting the Spring Bazaar, which also featured a rummage sale, craft fair, and lots and lots of food!

Preparing for the Hongwanji Spring Bazaar

The bakers have been hard at work at the temple baking for the Hongwanji Spring Bazaar at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. We'll have banana muffins, Okinawan mochi (nantu), and several varieties of manju.

The Spring Bazaar will be on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Hawaii Betsuin off Pali Highway. WBT will be in the Annex this year with baked goods, takuan, bitter melon namasu, pickled onions, and cabbage tsukemono.

Visit to Hawaii Betsuin & George Takei

On Sunday, February 18, the Windward Buddhist Temple sangha attended a special service at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin with guest speaker, George Takei. He delivered a powerful message of the importance of activism and what Buddhism means to him. After the service, both George and Brad graciously spent their time talking to everyone one-on-one, taking photos, and signing autographs.

Mahalo George and Brad for sharing your time with us!

Visit to Jikoen Hongwanji

Members of Windward Buddhist Temple visited Jikoen Hongwanji in Kalihi and attended their 85th Anniversary and Keirokai Service on Sunday, November 19, 2023. Jikoen Hongwanji and Windward Buddhist Temple are two of the four temples in the Honolulu District of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. Mahalo and congratulations to Rev. and Mrs. Nishiyama and the entire Jikoen sangha on their 85 years of sharing the Dharma and playing a vital role in the community.

Sunday Services at WBT will resume on November 26, 2023 with our Etaikyo Service. The Etaikyo Service is a time to remember those who came before us at WBT and helped to propagate the Dharma. In doing so, they've ensured that others are able to do so in the future as well. Rev. Bert Sumikawa will be officiating the service and will share a Dharma Message. We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and we'll see you on Sunday!

Visit to Mo'ili'ili Hongwanji

On our first weekend of “summer vacation” we attended Sunday Dharma Service at Mo'ili'ili Hongwanji Mission. Mahalo for having us! A familiar face, Rev. Sumikawa, gave a great Dharma Talk. Rev. Sumikawa is doing double duty as the interim minister at Moiliili and as the oversee minister at WBT.

Taste of Hongwanji 2019

Mahalo for joining us at the Taste of Hongwanji 2019 at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. Our booth featured our homemade takuan, bitter melon namasu, manju, mochi cupcakes, and boiled peanuts. We also had handmade crafts including photo cards, fabric cards made from old kimonos, and pillow cases. We completely sold out!
