Today's Dharma Talk was given by Rev. David Nakamoto on the theme of perseverance. Rev. David recounted his recent trip to Hokkaido, the northern-most prefecture in Japan, where the people of Hokkaido have had to persevere to overcome the harsh climate of the region.
Halloween refreshments were enjoyed after the service. In case you're wondering, "brains" taste a lot like peach Jello, and the worms definitely aren't the same ones discussed in Matts Okamoto's gardening class.

As part of today's Dharma Talk on change and the impermanence of life, Rev. David Nakamoto asked, "Have you experienced a loss in your life and what did it feel like?" Small groups were formed, and each member was asked to share.

Kailua Hongwanji Kyodan President, and all-around University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors fan, Dennis Tashiro delivered today's Dharma Talk, connecting the football and volleyball teams' success with the theme of ohana (family).
First Sunday Family Service
Today's Dharma Talk was given by Rev. David Nakamoto on the theme of discovery and asking questions, just as Christopher Columbus did before setting out to explore the unknown.
This was followed by a First Sunday pumpkin craft activity for the kids.
Peace Day & Autumn Ohigan Service
Today's Family Sunday Service recognized two important events: Peace Day in Hawaii, which was on Wednesday, September 21, and the Autumn Ohigan (Equinox), an observation of the seasonal change from Summer to Autumn.
Rededication Service
Today's Family Service at Kailua Hongwanji was also a Rededication Service. The Dharma Talk was given by Rev. Irene Nakamoto. She asked the congregation to discuss how how we are rededicating ourselves in embracing change and creating engagement, this year's Hongwanji theme.
Sunday Dharma Service
At our Sunday Family Service, Reverend David Nakamoto reflected on two events that occurred on this date, the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attack and the 24th anniversary of Hurricane Iniki striking the islands.
