Rev. Kerry Kiyohara from Mo'ili'ili Hongwanji was the guest speaker at our Sunday Family Service on February 12, 2017.
“I am a link on Amida Buddha’s Golden Chain of Love that stretches around the world. I must keep my link bright and strong.”
Our First Sunday Family Service for February featured a Dharma Talk by Rev. David Nakamoto. Following the service and refreshments, we built a Golden Chain of Love comprised of individual paper links that each person signed as they entered.
Following the service, we celebrated our February birthdays.
Each paper link was chained together into a single strand. On Valentine's Day, we remember Amida Buddha's Golden Chain of Love that stretches around the world.
We also decorated Golden Chain of Love Valentines Day cards. Folks of all ages joined in this fun and creative activity lead by Prudence Kusano.
“May every link in Amida Buddha’s Golden Chain of Love become bright and strong, and may we all attain Perfect Peace.”
Today's Dharma Talk was given by Rev. David Nakamoto, who gave us examples of embracing change.
Prudence gave us a preview of next week's First Sunday craft activity. We will be making a Golden Chain of Love as well as a Valentines themed activity.
Today's Dharma Talk was given by Keiji Kukino. This year's Honpa Hongwanji slogan is "Embrace Change - Action (Open Communication)" and Kuki shared his recent decision to get hearing aids, which will help him with the physical act of listening.
The Hoonko Service marks the anniversary of Shinran Shonin's death. Today's Dharma Talk was given by Rev. David Nakamoto, who shared a message of gratitude.
After a two-week break, Kailua Hongwanji held its first Family Service of the year on January 8, 2017.
We also celebrated Patsy's 93rd birthday. Happy Birthday Patsy!
Today's First Sunday family activity involved roosters, as 2017 is the Chinese Year of the Rooster. Instead of traditional paint brushes, Prudence provided ordinary plastic forks to uniquely "paint" each work of art.
Enjoy the gallery of unique roosters.
Today's Dharma Talk was given by Shirley Yangisawa, who shared highlights of her trip to Japan and the subject of gratitude. Everyone received a "kiss" from Shirley at the end -- the edible kind in chocolate, dark chocolate, or with almonds!
This was Kailua Hongwanji's final Sunday Family Service for 2016. The next First Sunday Family Service will be on January 8, 2017.
Rev. David Nakamoto gave today's Dharma Talk, tying in recent events around the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The Family Service was followed by the Annual General Membership Meeting and the installation of Kailua Hongwanji's Officers and Directors for 2017.

Rev. David Nakamoto delivered today's Dharma Talk commemorating Bodhi Day, which was followed by a Bodhi leaf family craft activity.
Our Family Service was held offsite at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kaneohe. Though it initially looked like we would see some wind and rain, the weather held up nicely throughout the service. Ho'omaluhia lives up to its name, "peaceful refuge."
