Preparing for the Hongwanji Spring Bazaar

The bakers have been hard at work at the temple baking for the Hongwanji Spring Bazaar at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. We'll have banana muffins, Okinawan mochi (nantu), and several varieties of manju.

The Spring Bazaar will be on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Hawaii Betsuin off Pali Highway. WBT will be in the Annex this year with baked goods, takuan, bitter melon namasu, pickled onions, and cabbage tsukemono.

Spring Ohigan is one of the Hongwanji’s major services. It is the time when there is harmony in the universe, when day and night are equal in length. It is a time for reflection, to recall and try to put into practice the Six Paramitas or Perfections to achieve a balance in our lives.

Nirvana & Remembrance Day Service

Nirvana & Remembrance Day Dharma Service for Sunday, February 25, 2024 with a Dharma Talk by Rev. Barbara Brennan at Windward Buddhist Temple. The service was officiated by Rev. Brennan. Nirvana Day marks the date when Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha) passed away.

Remembrance Day is a time to honor family, friends, and even pets who passed away during the month of February, regardless of the year. This weekly Jodo Shinshu Buddhist church service was recorded at Windward Buddhist Temple, a Shin Buddhist Temple in Kailua, Hawaii.

Visit to Hawaii Betsuin & George Takei

On Sunday, February 18, the Windward Buddhist Temple sangha attended a special service at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin with guest speaker, George Takei. He delivered a powerful message of the importance of activism and what Buddhism means to him. After the service, both George and Brad graciously spent their time talking to everyone one-on-one, taking photos, and signing autographs.

Dana Day & Pet Memorial Dharma Service

Dana Day and Pet Memorial Dharma Service for Sunday, February 11, 2024 with a Dharma Talk by Cyndi Osajima, Executive Director of Project Dana at Windward Buddhist Temple. The service was officiated by Rev. Brennan.

Dana, or selfless giving, is one of the six paramitas. Project Dana is a program that provides a multitude of services to the elderly and disabled through a corps of volunteers. For more information about Project Dana, please visit their website at https://projectdana.org.

Today was also our annual Pet Memorial Remembrance Service. Pets provide us with selfless giving with their unconditional love and companionship. A loss of a family pet is often our first encounter with mortality as children.
