We held our Hatsubon Service today, remembering those who passed before us and those in particular who passed since last year's obon. Families of those who passed in the last year were called individually to offer incense.
Rev. Umitani gave the Dharma Talk, focusing on the hatsu ("first") portion. The left side of the kanji character for hatsu represents clothes and the right side is a sword. To make clothes, one must first cut the cloth.
Members and friends of Kailua Hongwanji assembled the yagura (the musicians' stand) and strung the lights in preparation for our 2017 Bon Dance on July 22.
Ikebana arrangements were on display during the Kailua Hongwanji Bon Dance on July 16. Classes are held monthly at the temple.

The Kailua Hongwanji Bon Dance was held on Saturday, July 16, 2016. The food booth opened at 6 pm, while music and dancing began at 7.
Our food booth featured our BBQ plates with two BBQ sticks, grilled hot dog, homemade macaroni salad and takuan, and rice. Other favorites included chili plates, chili dog, and our famous andagi.
The Junior YBA of Honolulu operated the shave ice booth, featuring multiple flavors and a condensed milk drizzle, perfect for a warm evening.

Our Hatsubon Service was held on Sunday, July 10 at the temple. The Hatsubon commemorates the first obon since the passing of a loved one.
