Sunday Family Service
Today's Dharma Talk was given by Rev. David Nakamoto on the theme of perseverance. Rev. David recounted his recent trip to Hokkaido, the northern-most prefecture in Japan, where the people of Hokkaido have had to persevere to overcome the harsh climate of the region.
Halloween refreshments were enjoyed after the service. In case you're wondering, "brains" taste a lot like peach Jello, and the worms definitely aren't the same ones discussed in Matts Okamoto's gardening class.

Today's Dharma Talk was given by Prudence Kusano on dana (generosity), one of the six paramitas of Buddhism.
Dinner & A Movie Night
Dinner followed by the showing of the animated movie Zootopia, complete with freshly popped popcorn.
Zootopia is not only enjoyable as an animated comedy, but also delivers messages pertinent to the current state of the world including the dangers of stereotypes and prejudices. The movie also shows us the importance of embracing change.
“No matter what kind of person you are, I implore you: Try. Try to make the world a better place. Look inside yourself and recognize that change starts with you.”

As part of today's Dharma Talk on change and the impermanence of life, Rev. David Nakamoto asked, "Have you experienced a loss in your life and what did it feel like?" Small groups were formed, and each member was asked to share.

Kailua Hongwanji Kyodan President, and all-around University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors fan, Dennis Tashiro delivered today's Dharma Talk, connecting the football and volleyball teams' success with the theme of ohana (family).
Hawaii Foodbank Drive
Kailua Hongwanji is collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Hawaii Foodbank. You may bring your items to temple from October 2 until November 13. We have boxes designated for your donations.
Here are some suggestions: Rice, Vienna sausage, spam, corned beef, beef stew, spaghetti, green beans, mixed vegetables, macaroni, soups, beans, cereals, etc.
First Sunday Family Service
Today's Dharma Talk was given by Rev. David Nakamoto on the theme of discovery and asking questions, just as Christopher Columbus did before setting out to explore the unknown.
This was followed by a First Sunday pumpkin craft activity for the kids.
