Hoonko Dharma Service for Sunday, January 18, 2026 with a Dharma Talk by Rev. Satoshi Ka'imipono Tomioka of Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple on Hawaii island. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist service was officiated by Rev. Tomioka.

The Hoonko Service is an important annual memorial in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, commemorating founder Shinran Shonin's passing on January 16, 1263.

Nirvana Day Dharma Service for Sunday, February 19, 2023 with a Dharma Talk by Rev. Satoshi Kaʻimipono Tomioka at Windward Buddhist Temple. Rev. Tomioka is the resident minister of Puna Hongwanji Buddhist Temple on the Big Island and also oversees Pahala and Naalehu Hongwanji temples.

Nirvana Day commemorates Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha) passing into complete Nirvana, leaving behind his earthly form.

Gotan-e Service

At today’s Gotan-e and Family Service, our guest minister was Rev. Satoshi Tomioka who currently is serving as minister of Puna, Pahala and Naalehu Hongwanji Missions on Hawaii island. Gotan-e is to celebrate the birth of Shinran Shonin the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. In his message, Rev. Tomioka said that we must remember Amida Buddha’s compassion and that he embraces each of us just as we are.
