Rev. Charlene Kihara

Remembrance Dharma Service for Sunday, December 28, 2025 with a Dharma Talk by Rev. Charlene Kihara of Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist service was officiated by Rev. Kihara. Rev. Kihara shares a year-ending look back at moments of change (and lessons in impermanence) through the year 2025, both at Honpa Hongwanji and personally.

And as we leave the Year of the Snake and enter the Year of the Horse, Rev. Kihara shares the "Legend of the Great Race," which explains how the Zodiac animals were chosen.

After the service, we went outside and rang the temple bell, or kansho, 108 times to “ring out” the year 2025 in the Japanese tradition of Joya no Kane.

The monthly Remembrance Service is a time to honor family, friends, and even pets who passed away during the month of December, regardless of the year. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist church service was recorded at Windward Buddhist Temple, a Shin Buddhist Temple in Kailua, Hawaii.

Rev. Kiyohara's Dharma Talk has two parts:

  1. Children’s Dharma Story Time: “Santa Buddha: A Christmas Story”

  2. Dharma Talk for the Rest of Us: "The Bodhisattva Santa Claus”

Celebrated annually on December 8, Bodhi Day commemorates Shakyamuni Buddha's attainment of awakening or enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

"Don't Count the Days; Make the Days Count" is a quote by Muhammad Ali and the title of Joy's Dharma Talk. Joy shares what she's thankful for this Thanksgiving including a whirlwind 36 days this spring when her husband John received a kidney transplant.

Remembrance Dharma Service for Sunday, November 23, 2025 with a Dharma Talk by Carolyn Uchiyama, co-president of Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission. This Jodo Shinshu Buddhist service was officiated by Rev. Shingo Furusawa. Carolyn's Dharma Talk is titled "Ondobo - Ondogyo." Ondobo - Ondogyo is a Shin Buddhist phrase that means we are fellow travelers on the Buddhist path.

Carolyn also shares the story, "Addy's Cup of Sugar," a Stillwater tale by Jon J Muth based on a Buddhist story.

The Eitaikyo Service is a memorial service that honors past Windward Buddhist Temple Dharma followers & temple leaders who came before us. It is through their efforts that the Dharma continues to be shared at WBT to successive generations. Eitaikyo is one of the six special services held by Jodo Shinshu temples during the year.
